Hedgerow to home cooking
This is such a perfect time of year to forage! Either in charity shops for fun items of
clothing, little bits of pretty pottery and glassware or out in nature, in the hedgerow
for free food!
There is still wild garlic growing, the cleavers and nettles are perfect for picking and if
you have some butter and a pan you can make a delicious green sauce to stir into
rice or pasta dishes or simply pour over salmon or warm crusty bread.
You need a few a handfuls of wild garlic leaves (collect these from somewhere away
from traffic or where people walk their dogs)
125 g butter
…and a handful of cleavers, aka sticky willy, burr grass, sticky bobs, you know the
stuff that sticks to your cardy. Interesting fact, the woman who invented Velcro got
the idea from this plant! It’s full of vitamin C.
Nettle tops, careful how you gather these, just the top few leaves. Chock full of
Vitamins and minerals, you don’t need many.
As with all harvesting from the wild only take what you need, no more, as right
behind you queuing up there are mammals, birds and butterflies who need them too!
You can, if you want to, blanch the leaves by dousing them in boiling water and
immediately refreshing in cold water, then chop finely. Warm the butter in a pan and
stir through, season as desired.
Wherever you choose to forage, in the veg patch, in the charity shops, in the wild
countryside or simply in your imagination …ENJOY.
Lots of love

Love this Caroline, (I love your work by the way ever since MBB) so simple, it has inspired me to go out and see what I can find!
I never knew you could eat that sticky weed! You learn something each day! Googled it after reading your post and discovered it makes a great detox water too! Will def be trying that next!
Ps I just re watched all of the episodes of life begins at 40. Loved it even more second time around!!
